MLB scores: Cardinals snap out of slump, end Dodgers’ six-game win streak

Semyon Varlamov Authentic Jersey
Carlos Martinez tossed a gem and Dexter Fowler blasted a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Cardinals ended the Dodgers’ six-game win streak with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.

Martinez allowed just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts over eight innings to earn his fourth win of the season and lower his May ERA to 2.03.

When he steps on the mound, the other team knows it’s going to have its hands full, manager Mike Matheny told reporters after the game about Martinez, who owns a 3.03 ERA since the beginning of the 2015 season.

Fowler’s estimated 429-foot game-winning shot to right-center field came off Ross Stripling, who picked up the loss for the Dodgers. Starter Hyun-Jin Ryu was solid in his first start since May 11, allowing one run on three hits in six innings.

Seung Hwan Oh pitched a scoreless ninth as the Red Birds won for just the four time in their last 14 games.

His solo home run in the top of the eighth inning was unlikely to have any real impact on the game 鈥?it cut the Braves鈥?lead to 8-4 鈥?but that didn’t matter much to the Blue Jays Jose Bautista. Nope, Joey Bats was more interested in making his bat flip epic, and benches cleared. This sort of thing has gotten Bautista in trouble before 鈥?the punch to the jaw he took from the Rangers Odor Rougned was a year ago nearly to the day, in fact. Some guys never learn.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky is taking the NFL to war over player health

It was a late afternoon last March in the busy halls of The Capitol when Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) shattered the football world’s biggest lie.

Schakowsky sat in a corner of a small room crammed with scientists and lawmakers all collected there by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to discuss concussion research and treatment. She read over notes in a patterned jacket and high-collared blouse, but quickly grew impatient waiting to attack.

“The NFL is peddling a false sense of security. Football is a high-risk sport because of the routine hits, not just diagnosable concussions,” she said. “What the American public needs now is honesty about the health risks.”

No one bit. The rest of the gallery barely paid her any attention. Schakowsky sighed before circling back.

“I just want to ask what I think is a yes or no question,” she continued. “Do you think there is a link between football and degenerative brain disorders like CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy)?”

The Patriots clearly had their caveats about re-signing Blount, instead adding Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee as free agents this spring. What they may not have planned for was lack of interest in him on the early market. New England offered Blount a last-minute contract on May 9, which is known as a “June 1 tender,” ensuring he couldn’t be signed away without a compensatory draft pick in return.

Blount’s one-year, $1.1 million deal was exceeded by the Eagles. The $2.8 million Blount can potentially earn with Philadelphia next season could net the Patriots a sixth-round compensatory pick. It could also serve as insurance for the Patriots in the event that either Chris Long or Barkevious Mingo, two of the team’s free-agency losses, don’t make the final roster with a new team this season.

Mark Sanchez signing reminds us Bears are NFL’s most QB-clueless team

Game Youth Carl Banks Jersey The Bears have been in hibernation at quarterback going on 33 seasons. Neither Mark Sanchez nor Mike Glennon will change that.

Those are Chicago’s QB signings in 2017 NFL free agency after it got rid of Jay Cutler and let both Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley go to San Francisco. That’s three 2016 starters gone, replaced by a couple guys who should not be more than backups.

If you’re keeping count, the Bears have started 34 guys since their last Pro Bowl quarterback — that punky Super Bowl winner Jim McMahon in 1985.

Now that the Cubs have won the World Series (although not over Miami), it’s the most Back To The Future thing in Chicago sports.

Some players have said the MLB justice system is too lenient on PED offenders. Because nearly all players who test positive claim ignorance, maybe the punishments/suspensions should be more intense. Maybe that would deter players from taking things without knowing what’s in them, as this is obviously an issue, what with all the players who unintentionally take bad stuff.

If players are actually in the dark about what they’re taking, and if players actually want to do something about it, it seems there’s a need — and an opportunity — for better education and prevention.

Game Youth Dan Bailey Jersey Orioles starting pitcher Wade Miley isn’t here for his performance Friday against the White Sox, but because he was sent packing in the first inning of Baltimore’s 4-2 victory after getting hit by consecutive line drives. One is bad enough, but anyone who gets drilled by two straight comebackers must have angered fate in some way.

I’m lucky that i didn’t have brain damage…

As many of you know on Friday June 25th I had an accident. A large price of metal hit me in the head/eye resulting in a fractured nose, 2 fractured orbital bones, and most significantly, the loss of vision in my right eye. I was immediately taken to the ER and then transferred to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 eye hospital in the world.

That night, the doctors informed me that the damage to my eye was extreme and essentially that my eye had been crushed like a grape. The doctors told me they were going to do everything possible to reconstruct it but in all likelihood I would never regain sight in my right eye. The first surgery was somewhat a success but overall nothing had changed, so after discussions with my family and my doctors, it was decided that the best chance I had to live a normal life was to have my right eye removed and have a prosthetic one put in.

Matt Moore Kids Jersey This decision was not an easy one to make but to me it seemed like the right one so on Tuesday afternoon I went forward with the surgery. I’m currently still in Miami recovering from surgery but I’m doing well. This has been the hardest week of my life but I’ve had amazing support from my family and friends to help me get through it. For those who have been wishing me well, your support has not gone unnoticed and I appreciate everyone who has kept me in their thoughts and prayers. I had the best doctors in the world doing their best work on me and for that I am grateful as well. Although this injury has been tough it could have been much worse…I’m lucky to still have vision in my left eye…

I’m lucky that i didn’t have brain damage…and I’m lucky to be surrounded my the most loving and understanding people in the world. I just wanted to write this message to let everyone know that even though I suffered some bad luck, I’m not dead. I’m gonna be alright, I’m gonna persevere, and I’m gonna succeed. It takes more than this to bring me down. Again thanks to everyone for the support.

Smith still starter despite Mahomes trade – Reid

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid says Alex Smith will remain the starter at quarterback, despite their stunning trade to move up and select Patrick Mahomes II.

The Chiefs moved all the way up from pick number 27 to 10 in a deal with the Buffalo Bills, electing to take a shot on Mahomes – viewed by many as the wildcard of the quarterback class.

While no-one will doubt Mahomes’ abilities with his arm, his ‘gunslinger’ approach and willingness to throw the ball from any number of off-balance positions has drawn both praise and criticism.

Chris and Kathy Berman married in 1983, four years after Chris joined ESPN, according to The couple had two children.

Chris Berman, a big SF Giants fan, was at Citi Field watching game and had to be notified of his wife’s accident by NYPD officers.

The wreck reportedly occurred on rural Route 64 near Woodbury, Conn. Edward Bertulis, 87, also was killed.

The description of the incident, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET, via The Hartford Courant:

“According to the state police, after the two cars collided on Sherman Hill Road in Woodbury, Bertulis’ 2003 Ford Escape struck a utility pole and rolled over onto its roof, police said, and Berman’s car, a 2003 Lexus SC 430, veered off the road, went down an embankment and overturned in a small body of water, police said.”

Berman, who recently signed a new contract with ESPN, remains employed by the network. His 31-year run as host on “Sunday NFL Countdown” ended with the conclusion of the 2016 NFL season.nike_steelers_1890

Peterson has played in just 20 games over the past three years

Exit velocity is the new thing, right? So just hit every ball really hard. No need for weak contact all the time. Just hit balls very hard. Every at-bat. The faster it comes off the bat, the faster the game goes.
Authentic Mens Kawann Short Jersey
But for Peterson, Revis and Lynch, each brings potential complications to a team.

Peterson has played in just 20 games over the past three years, and his 2016 season was a disaster — 37 carries for 72 yards and no touchdowns as he fought through knee and groin injuries. In Peterson’s defense, his limited play came behind an injury-depleted offensive line.

Authentic Mens Joe Haden Jersey Only four players in NFL history have rushed for over 1,000 yards at age 32: Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, John Riggins and, last year, Frank Gore. None had an injury history like that of Peterson.

Then there is Peterson’s often obtuse and delusional attitude. Last year he complained about the boredom and grind (as he called it) of going through the Vikings’ offseason program and training camp. He must have forgotten that, in the new CBA, the offseason program was severely curtailed along with with the demise of two-a-day practices and a cutback in fully-padded practices at camp.

And let’s not forget Peterson’s child abuse case that eliminated his 2014 season and ultimately cost him over $4 million in salary for his six-game suspension after he pleaded no contest to the charges. NFL teams have not forgotten, and they are not anxious for the potential PR pushback from fans, sponsors and media if they sign him.

Tony Gwynn’s greatness was not just in the totals, but in the details

Tony Gwynn wasn’t the greatest hitter who ever lived. He didn’t collect the most hits. He wasn’t even the brightest star of his day. All he did was stay great for 20 seasons, and baseball fans should never forget that.

Authentic Womens Curtis Joseph Jersey The change to the intentional walk rule adds to baseball’s growing rules Hall of Shame. The slide rule. Increased use of replay. The shrinking strike zone. The potential ruination of extra innings.

Fans and pundits rightly complain about the real drags on the pace of play, such as the TV commercial breaks between half-innings (MLB responded to that by putting a clock on the players, as if they were lollygagging), multiple mound conferences and pitchers who take forever to go to the plate with runners on base.

Charles Barkley Elite Jersey The conferences are being reviewed, but there’s little chance of the other two things changing. Owners won’t give up a penny in rights fees so networks can show fewer ads, and the union is against a pitch clock at the major league level.

At least we don’t have to sit through pitchers throwing four wide ones anymore. Nothing ever went wrong with them anyway, right?

He told The Boston Globe he won’t opt out of the seven-year, $217 million contract he signed with the Red Sox in the 2015 offseason. He can terminate the contract after the 2018 season, when he’ll have four years and $127 million remaining on the pact.

That stance is counterproductive. If he’s still healthy and effective after ’18 (more on that in a second), Price could command a hefty raise at age 33, from the Red Sox or another club (see: Sabathia, CC, and the Yankees). The demand for top-tier starting pitchers will still be robust.

Watch: Rockies’ Mark Reynolds hits broken-bat home run

Most broken-bat swings result in a weak ground ball or pop up.

Rockies slugger Mark Reynolds got sawed off on a pitch by Arizona pitcher Zack Greinke Saturday that splintered his bat — yet Reynolds still somehow muscled the ball over the left-center-field wall for a home run.

The same cameras that documented the record-setting winning streak in April had captured the malaise in August. Just part of the scenery, as they had been all season.

I don’t think we ever felt that anything that was happening to us was because we were being filmed all the time, Garber said.

The players might not have wanted to be recorded amid the wretched skid, but they ultimately remained willing — again, because of relationships.

The beauty about this project is that we became friends. We were not the media. We were not WXIA. We were not WSB. We were their friends, Ortiz-Guzman said. There was no animosity.

In fact, local media would sometimes get the cold shoulder on interview requests, then watch in dismay and envy as players would open up to Ortiz-Guzman.

When people saw us interviewing somebody, they would run (over to us) simply because this was their chance to get something good, he said.

Diamond and the crew tried to use good judgment in documenting the struggles, to not focus their attention for too long on a slumping player after a poor at-bat, or after a critical error in the field, or after a blown save.

They tried to recognize the line between documentation and exploitation.

I can’t say once in a while we didn’t cross over the line, Diamond said.

NFL Draft 2017: Deshaun Watson’s momma brings son to tears

LSU’s Leonard Fournette and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey went quickly in expected spots to the Jaguars (No. 4) and Panthers (No. 8), respectively. But Cook, with some mysterious off-field issues, didn’t hear his name despite, maybe, being a more complete back than either of the others.

He will be off the board early in Round 2.

Whether you like Deshaun Watson as an NFL prospect or not, it’s hard not to root for the young man.

Knowing his story of having a home paid for by former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Warrick Dunn , or simply the way he carries himself, it’s easy to want to see the young man succeed.

But when you see his reaction to a note written by his mother after the 2017 national champion was selected No. 12 overall by the Houston Texans, it’s hard to not show emotion for the former Clemson Tiger.

Watson was handed a note at the draft party last night and what happened next is tear-jerking, not just for the viewer, but for Watson. With Jay Cutler having moved on to the broadcast booth, Kaepernick holds the mantle as the most expensive player without an NFL home, surprising even given the off-field considerations we knew would follow him.

It was a long wait for DeShone Kizer to finally hear his name as the first quarterback taken in the second round, at No. 52. The bright side: It’s a chance to start right away for the Browns.

The down side: It’s a chance to start right away for the Browns — when he clearly isn’t ready to do so. Davis Webb (No. 87) and Beatherd (No. 104) went in project backup spots in Round 2.

It was James who damn near single-handedly pushed Cleveland to their 119-114 win on Thursday.

Lonzo’s father LaVar Ball released the sneakers under his own Big Baller Brand after each Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour declined to reach an agreement on an endorsement deal. LaVar was looking for a co-branding partnership that would have allowed Big Baller Brand to release its own sneakers and sign its own athletes under the umbrella of a major sneaker company, like Jordan Brand has with Nike.

This isn’t the end of Big Baller Brand, or more importantly, LaVar and his sons’ influence in the sports apparel space. It’s only the beginning.

Authentic Mens Devon Kennard Jersey It was James who damn near single-handedly pushed Cleveland to their 119-114 win on Thursday. He had 41 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists, a couple blocks, and only three turnovers. No other Cavalier had more than 13 points.

Cleveland seemed completely disengaged for the first 24 minutes, when they gave up two 37-point quarters to the Pacers and found themselves down 25 points at halftime. Their defense has been a sticking point for months now — this season, Cleveland was only 22nd-best in the league, dropping 12 spots from last year’s championship roster. No team has ever won a championship with a defense as bad as the Cavaliers’, but we all remember what they did in the 2016 Finals shutting down the Warriors for the final three games. In theory, that should still be something the Cavaliers are capable of doing.

Authentic Mens Bo Jackson Jersey The dunker is the protagonist. The defender is the antagonist. The air above the paint is the stage. We the audience all wait in eager anticipation.

What I want to talk about is the importance of antagonist. Without that role, a poster dunk is just a dunk: impressive, but not dramatic. Without someone willing to step in as a villain, there can be no heroes.

Without Mike Muscala, this John Wall dunk is just another dunk. With Mike Muscala and his face, it’s a showstopper.
